During a recent training class lunch break, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foldnfly.com\/#\/1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-2\">paper airplane contest<\/a> broke out. While I cannot claim victory in this event, I can proudly say that I did not come in last place! As the winner went home with a CATI pad of paper, today\u2019s modeling challenge was proposed: \u201cCan we make a paper airplane in SOLIDWORKS, using the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=3JMW0-fqKXk\">Sheet Metal features<\/a>?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I bet we can! Let&#8217;s go ahead and give it a try!<\/p>\n<p>For the first step, we create our nice 8.5\u201d x 11\u201d sheet of paper using the sheet metal <em>Base Flange<\/em> command. In this case, our sheet metal thickness is going to be 0.004\u201d and our bend radius will be set at 0.005\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"877\" height=\"566\" class=\"wp-image-191335\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cati.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/graphical-user-interface-application-description-1.png\" alt=\"Graphical user interface, application Description automatically generated\" srcset=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/graphical-user-interface-application-description-1.png 877w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/graphical-user-interface-application-description-1-300x194.png 300w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/graphical-user-interface-application-description-1-768x496.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 877px) 100vw, 877px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Using Sketch Bends<\/h2>\n<p>The next step, just folding it in half, is easy. We do this by creating a <em>Sketched Bend<\/em>, using a line sketched on the top face. We will only bend it 90 degrees. This should let us focus on just one side of the airplane, for now.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-191337\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cati.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/a-picture-containing-chart-description-automatica.png\" alt=\"Sketched bends in SOLIDWORKS sheet metal let us bend the paper along our desired bend lines.\" width=\"1432\" height=\"706\" srcset=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/a-picture-containing-chart-description-automatica.png 1432w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/a-picture-containing-chart-description-automatica-300x148.png 300w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/a-picture-containing-chart-description-automatica-1024x505.png 1024w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/a-picture-containing-chart-description-automatica-768x379.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1432px) 100vw, 1432px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This <em>Sketch Bend<\/em> command is going to be our main tool for this project. When you have a fixed size of material, our paper, the sketched lines indicate where the center of the folds will be. As we continue to add additional bends, we need to be cautious about the bends overlapping any existing bend geometry. We cannot have bends run into other bends. This is prevented by adjusting the location of the sketched lines that are defining the bends. We can add a small 0.03\u201d dimension to keep it above the existing bend.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-191338\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cati.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/chart-description-automatically-generated.png\" alt=\"Making a paper airplane in SOLIDWORKS requires several different angles. Luckily, sketched bends are very flexible tools.\" width=\"1276\" height=\"760\" srcset=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/chart-description-automatically-generated.png 1276w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/chart-description-automatically-generated-300x179.png 300w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/chart-description-automatically-generated-1024x610.png 1024w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/chart-description-automatically-generated-768x457.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1276px) 100vw, 1276px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Next, we need to fold this section back over onto itself, just like the right half of this real paper plane.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"480\" height=\"640\" class=\"wp-image-191339\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cati.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/a-white-piece-of-paper-on-a-wooden-surface-descri.jpeg\" alt=\"A white piece of paper on a wooden surface Description automatically generated with low confidence\" srcset=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/a-white-piece-of-paper-on-a-wooden-surface-descri.jpeg 480w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/a-white-piece-of-paper-on-a-wooden-surface-descri-225x300.jpeg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, here is where we run into our first major roadblock. SOLIDWORKS is unable to bend both paper layers using any of the bend tools.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1543\" height=\"662\" class=\"wp-image-191340\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cati.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/word-image-191334-5.png\" srcset=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/word-image-191334-5.png 1543w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/word-image-191334-5-300x129.png 300w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/word-image-191334-5-1024x439.png 1024w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/word-image-191334-5-768x329.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1543px) 100vw, 1543px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This means that we will need to model our plan differently than the way we \u201cmanufacture\u201d it. We will just have to work backwards by modeling the paper airplane starting at a corner of the sheet of paper and working towards the center. Using an unfolded paper plane as my reference, we\u2019ll get started\u2026.again.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"480\" height=\"640\" class=\"wp-image-191341\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cati.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/a-picture-containing-text-envelope-description-a-rotated.jpeg\" alt=\"A picture containing text, envelope Description automatically generated\" srcset=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/a-picture-containing-text-envelope-description-a-rotated.jpeg 480w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/a-picture-containing-text-envelope-description-a-225x300.jpeg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Making a Paper Airplane in SOLIDWORKS&#8230; Backwards?<\/h2>\n<p>Let\u2019s keep attacking it with the <em>Sketched Bend<\/em> feature, using it for every fold in our paper airplane. Some bends will be 90 degrees, and others will be a full fold at 180 degrees.
