As a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cati.com\/software\/solidworks-simulation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SOLIDWORKS Simulation<\/a> user for many years, it has added a lot of great tools to make advanced simulation studies more robust and more accessible than ever. Arguably one of the biggest advantages of meshing in 3DEXPERIENCE Simulation is the ability to use advanced mesh types like hexahedrons, wedges, quad shell elements, etc. Advanced elements like <a href=\"https:\/\/hal.inria.fr\/hal-01551603\/document\">hexahedrons<\/a> (also known as brick elements) offer more accurate results given similar mesh density to traditional <a href=\"https:\/\/space.mit.edu\/RADIO\/CST_online\/mergedProjects\/3D\/common_overview\/common_overview_mesh_tet.htm#:~:text=Each%20triangle%20of%20the%20surface,is%20called%20the%20volume%20mesh.\">tetrahedral<\/a> elements. Image courtesy of Dassault Systemes.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>One of the downsides of hexahedral elements is the meshed geometry must be such that there is a sweepable shape. This means that overhangs, extra extrusions, and holes that don\u2019t follow the sweep direction would all make it impossible to use these advanced elements for analysis. Many simulation programs get around this by splitting or \u201cpartitioning\u201d the shape into separate volumes that are sweepable. As usual, 3DEXPERIENCE Simulation does this as well but ups the ante above those other tools. Let\u2019s take a look at partitioning for simulation on the 3DEXPERIENCE Platform.<\/p>\n<h2>Partitioning for Better Meshing<\/h2>\n<p>We\u2019ll start with the part below. It is a cylinder from an air-cooled motorcycle engine. Notice the removal of small features like fillets on the simplified version in the figure below.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_190170\" style=\"width: 1930px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-190170\" class=\"wp-image-190170 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cati.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Motorcycle-engine.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"1920\" height=\"976\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-190170\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Figure 2<\/p><\/div>\n<p>We can take the simplified model into the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cati.com\/role\/structural-performance-engineer-sfo\/\"><em>Structural Model Creation<\/em><\/a> app to get feedback on how to best mesh this shape. Select the compass, click <em>Structural Model Creation<\/em>, click \u201cPartition Hex Mesh,\u201d and finally select the component itself as a support. 3DEXPERIENCE Simulation will then color the part according to the methods that can be used to mesh it.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_190161\" style=\"width: 2344px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-190161\" class=\"wp-image-190161\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cati.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/a-picture-containing-diagram-description-automati.png\" alt=\"A picture containing diagramDescription automatically generated\" width=\"2334\" height=\"1763\" srcset=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/a-picture-containing-diagram-description-automati.png 2334w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/a-picture-containing-diagram-description-automati-300x227.png 300w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/a-picture-containing-diagram-description-automati-1024x773.png 1024w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/a-picture-containing-diagram-description-automati-768x580.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2334px) 100vw, 2334px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-190161\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Figure 3<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The orange color on the part in the figure above indicates a volume that is NOT mesh-able by hexahedral elements. As is, 3DEXPERIENCE Simulation will assign a tetrahedral mesh instead. However, many of the areas on this model could be split from the others into sweepable shapes. This is where partitioning comes in!<\/p>\n<h3>Meshing in 3DEXPERIENCE with the Partition Tool<\/h3>\n<p>The partitioning tool is most easily accessed via the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cati.com\/role\/tire-analysis-engineer-tirei\/\"><em>Simulation Model Preparation<\/em><\/a> app included with your 3DEXPERIENCE Simulation role. Simply click the compass and select the app from the list to launch it. This app contains sets of tools used for simplification of CAD models for use in simulation. We\u2019re looking for \u201cPartition\u201d under the \u201cIdealize\u201d tab. For example, if I want to partition one of the assembly tabs, I can select the face that it is extruded from as a cutting element. If we extrapolate that face infinitely, it will cut through the tab, separating it as its own volume. It\u2019s a simple process that works very well. However, recently one of the updates to the meshing feature in 3DEXPERIENCE Simulation has added an automatic partitioning tool to do all of that work for you! All you must do is select the volume, and click the checkbox for \u201cAutomatic Partitioning,\u201d and soon you will have a fully hex-meshable part! A further benefit of using the \u201cPartition\u201d tool is that the partitioned hex-mesh will be fully conforming. Image courtesy of Dassault Systemes.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Finally, if you are attempting to mesh a part that has non-sweepable volumes, the partition hex-mesh algorithm will assign tetrahedral elements to the non-hex volumes and create a &#8220;tie contact&#8221; between the volumes automatically! Optionally, you can also specify a layer of pyramid elements to act as a conforming mesh boundary between the hexahedral elements and the tetrahedral elements.
