The <em>Smart Dimension<\/em> tool is very intuitive. You simply select the items you want to dimension and, depending on where you place the resulting dimension, SOLIDWORKS creates the parameter. There are a several other dimension tools for applying dimensions to our sketches. We have options for Chain, Baseline, Ordinate, and even a few more. For this post we are going to take advantage of the <em>Path Length Dimension<\/em> option.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"297\" height=\"244\" class=\"wp-image-188924\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cati.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/graphical-user-interface-text-application-descr-2.png\" alt=\"Graphical user interface, text, application Description automatically generated\" \/><\/p>\n<p>More specifically, we are going to use this <em>Path Length Dimension <\/em>as a reference dimension in an equation.<\/p>\n<p>Here is the design request that we received. Pretty impressive graphics design work!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1098\" height=\"770\" class=\"wp-image-188925\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cati.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/shape-arrow-description-automatically-generated.png\" alt=\"Shape, arrow Description automatically generated\" srcset=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/shape-arrow-description-automatically-generated.png 1098w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/shape-arrow-description-automatically-generated-300x210.png 300w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/shape-arrow-description-automatically-generated-1024x718.png 1024w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/shape-arrow-description-automatically-generated-768x539.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1098px) 100vw, 1098px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>To accomplish this task, we will utilize the <em>Hole Wizard<\/em> feature and create a <em>Curve Driven Pattern<\/em> to get our complete array of holes. That sounds easy enough; but what if the part geometry changes? Will we need to edit the pattern to add more holes?<\/p>\n<p>To fully capture this design intent, we want the quantity of these equally spaced holes to be driven by our part size. We will accomplish this by using an equation to define the quantity of holes, relating it to a <em>Path Length Dimension<\/em> value.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s look deeper into the steps to accomplish this task.<\/p>\n<p>Creating a sketch on the flange of the part, and using the <em>Offset Entities<\/em> command, gives us the curve to drive our pattern. Using this <em>Path Length Dimension<\/em> tool is simple. Selecting all these sketch segments and it quickly creates the driven dimension that is the entire length of those segments.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1115\" height=\"746\" class=\"wp-image-188926\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cati.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/a-picture-containing-graphical-user-interface-des.png\" alt=\"A picture containing graphical user interface Description automatically generated\" srcset=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/a-picture-containing-graphical-user-interface-des.png 1115w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/a-picture-containing-graphical-user-interface-des-300x201.png 300w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/a-picture-containing-graphical-user-interface-des-1024x685.png 1024w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/a-picture-containing-graphical-user-interface-des-768x514.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1115px) 100vw, 1115px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Going into the equation editor makes it easy to create <em>Global Variables<\/em>. We are going to create a new global variable named \u201cPath_Length\u201d and link it the Path Length reference dimension we just created. Linking a <em>Global Variable<\/em> to this dimension will make it easier for us to use it in our equation.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1120\" height=\"834\" class=\"wp-image-188927\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cati.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/graphical-user-interface-description-automaticall-3.png\" alt=\"Graphical user interface Description automatically generated\" srcset=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/graphical-user-interface-description-automaticall-3.png 1120w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/graphical-user-interface-description-automaticall-3-300x223.png 300w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/graphical-user-interface-description-automaticall-3-1024x763.png 1024w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/graphical-user-interface-description-automaticall-3-768x572.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1120px) 100vw, 1120px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Next, we need to exit this sketch and go create our hole. Using the hole wizard for an M2 screw, and placing it on the midpoint of the left line segment, works great.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1404\" height=\"843\" class=\"wp-image-188928\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cati.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/shape-rectangle-description-automatically-genera.png\" alt=\"Shape, rectangle Description automatically generated with medium confidence\" srcset=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/shape-rectangle-description-automatically-genera.png 1404w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/shape-rectangle-description-automatically-genera-300x180.png 300w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/shape-rectangle-description-automatically-genera-1024x615.png 1024w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/shape-rectangle-description-automatically-genera-768x461.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1404px) 100vw, 1404px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Next, we use the <em>Curve Driven Pattern<\/em> command to create the additional holes. We set the option for Equal Spacing. In the Quantity parameter, we can hit the \u201c<strong>=<\/strong>\u201d key to enter an equation. In this case, the quantity is equal to the global variable \u201cPath_Length\u201d divided by 9.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1201\" height=\"662\" class=\"wp-image-188929\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cati.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/a-picture-containing-graphical-user-interface-des-1.png\" alt=\"A picture containing graphical user interface Description automatically generated\" srcset=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/a-picture-containing-graphical-user-interface-des-1.png 1201w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/a-picture-containing-graphical-user-interface-des-1-300x165.png 300w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/a-picture-containing-graphical-user-interface-des-1-1024x564.png 1024w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/a-picture-containing-graphical-user-interface-des-1-768x423.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1201px) 100vw, 1201px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Editing the initial sketch of this part and adjusting its size will make it easy to see how the design intent, \u201cseveral evenly spaced holes\u201d was captured and maintained through future geometry modifications.
